About

The blog

Sharpenr is about working on the web as a passionate entrepreneur or web worker. It is about coming up with the ideas, turning them in to reality, and then making them work.

On a higher level Sharpenr is about leading a professional and personal life cutting out complexity, doing away with “extras” and turning a blind eye to “feature rich” in favor of clarity and simplicity. Doing “better” rather than doing “more”.

The author

My name is Jaan Orvet and I am ridiculously passionate about building web-based businesses and apps.

I work as a web strategist, business developer, creative director, and communications strategist. On occasion I do User Experience work. My clients range from small startups to large international companies based in my native* Sweden, in England and right here in the US.

Jaan Orvet

I have worked in the online/web “industry” since 1994. During that time I have launched and co-founded several startups (KIO, Treepose, SMC, Nearbie, etc) and worked for companies like the Big Purple (Yahoo!), Spray and a few others.

I started blogging on March 10, 2003 and never looked back (but I took a 7 month break in 2004 to dedicate myself fully to the company I worked with at the time).

I am always open to discussing new projects, sharing ideas, brainstorming, speaking at conferences (and attending them), or just meeting up for a coffee.

The easiest way to get hold of me is via email sharpenr AT gmail DOT com or at LinkedIn.

* “…my native Sweden…”? I’m Swedish by birth, mixed European by heritage, part English by upbringing, and American by residency. That should explain my accent and why I sometimes pronounce “veggie” as “weggie” and “Darth Vader” as “Darth Wader”. Oh well.

The name

When my mind goes dull like a blunt pencil I need a sharpener.

Usually that means reading a good blog or listening to insightful podcasts. Hopefully Sharpenr can be one of the tools you use to reinvigorate your mind from time to time.

Pick up my feed and you’ll always have a Sharpenr on hand.
